Key points

  • ✓Only the FinOps Foundation awards FinOps Foundation certifications; independent courses teach skills but do not certify you. Details
  • ✓Official prices checked October 1, 2026: FOCP course + exam $500, FOCP exam only $325, FOCUS Analyst course + exam $400; Introduction to FinOps and Introduction to FOCUS are free. Details
  • ✓If you need the credential, buy the official exam; if you only need concepts, start with the free introductions. Details

Skills training and credentials are different purchases

A credential is evidence for someone else: a recruiter, a procurement checklist, a promotion case. Skills training is for you: being able to open a billing export and come back with a correct answer. Some options give you both, some only one. Decide which you need before you compare prices.

Only the FinOps Foundation awards FinOps Foundation certifications. Independent courses, including the ones on this site, can teach the same material, but completing them does not certify you, and they do not include the official exams.

Suggested paths by role

Data engineer

You likely own the pipeline that lands billing exports in the warehouse. Start free: Introduction to FOCUS, then your provider’s FOCUS export documentation, then the FOCUS Use Case Library. If you want structured practice turning that data into analysis (commitment reconciliation, anomaly detection, unit economics), that is what FOCUS Billing Analysis with SQL covers. Add the official FOCUS Analyst credential only if someone will ask for it.

Cloud or platform engineer

Start with the free Introduction to FinOps for the vocabulary your finance partners use. After that, the most useful skills are tagging and allocation, rightsizing and cost automation. The FinOps for Engineers course on this site covers tagging enforcement, rightsizing and automation hands-on. If you need a credential, look at the Foundation’s FinOps Certified Engineer in its catalog.

FinOps analyst, or moving into FinOps

If a job description or employer asks for FOCP, the official exam is the only thing that satisfies that. If you already study well on your own, the $325 exam-only option is the cheapest route; the $500 course plus exam adds the Foundation’s own material. For analysis practice on FOCUS data, the flagship course here costs less than either, but it is practice, not a credential.

Manager or finance partner

The free Introduction to FinOps is probably enough. You need to know what to ask for and how to read the answer, not how to write the queries.

When the free or official option is the better choice

  • You only need the concepts. The Foundation’s free introductions cover them well.
  • You need the certificate itself. Buy the official course or exam; independent training cannot substitute.
  • Your employer pays for training and prefers vendor-recognized providers. The Foundation’s catalog is the straightforward choice.
  • You learn best from your own data. The free Sandbox, Use Case Library and your provider’s export are enough to start.

An independent course is worth paying for when you want a structured sequence of exercises with worked answers, at a lower price than the official options, and you do not need the credential. Read a free lesson first and judge for yourself; every course on this site has one.

FOCUS Billing Analysis with SQL is a 5-week, self-paced course built around the same kind of analysis: commitment reconciliation, anomaly detection and unit economics on a multi-cloud scenario. Week 1 is free. It is independent training and does not include the FinOps Foundation exam.
